External Review Anybody who was initially confused by singer/songwriter John Mayer’s foray into blues with 2005’s Try! John Mayer Trio Live in Concert could only have been further confounded upon listening to the album and coming to the realization that it was actually good. And not just kinda good, especially for guy who had been largely labeled as a Dave Matthews clone, but really, truthfully, organically good as a blues album in its own right. However, for longtime fans who had been keeping tabs on Mayer, the turn might not have been so unexpected. Soon after the release of his 2003 sophomore album, the laid-back, assuredly melodic Heavier Things, Mayer began appearing on albums by such iconic blues and jazz artists as Buddy Guy, B.B. King, and Herbie Hancock. And not just singing, but playing guitar next to musicians legendary on the instrument. In short, he was seeking out these artists in an attempt to delve into the roots of the blues, a music he obviously has a deep affection for. Rather than his blues trio being a one-off side project completely disconnected to his past work, it is clear now that it was the next step in his musical development. And truthfully, while Try! certainly showcases Mayer’s deft improvisational blues chops, it’s more of a blues/soul album in the tradition of such electric blues legends as Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan, and features songs by Mayer that perfectly marry his melodic songcraft and his blues-slinger inclinations. In fact, what seemed at the time a nod to his largely female fan base (the inclusion of “Daughters” and “Something’s Missing” off Heavier Things) was actually a hint that he was bridging his sound for his listeners, showing them where he was going.
That said, nothing he did up until the excellent, expansive Try! could have prepared you for the monumental creative leap forward that is Mayer’s 2006 studio effort, Continuum. Working with his blues trio/rhythm section of bassist Pino Palladino and drummer Steve Jordan, along with guest spots by trumpeter Roy Hargrove and guitarist Ben Harper, Mayer brings all of his recent musical explorations and increasing talents as a singer/songwriter to bear on Continuum. Produced solely by Mayer and Jordan, the album is a devastatingly accomplished, fully realized effort that in every way exceeds expectations and positions Mayer as one of the most relevant artists of his generation. Adding weight to the notion that Mayer’s blues trio is more than just a creative indulgence, he has carried over two tracks from the live album in “Vultures” and the deeply metaphorical soul ballad “Gravity.” These are gut-wrenchingly poignant songs that give voice to a generation of kids raised on TRL teen stars and CNN soundbites who’ve found themselves all grown up and fighting a war of “beliefs.” Grappling with a handful of topics — social and political, romantic and sexual, pointedly personal and yet always universal in scope — Mayer’s Continuum here earns a legitimate comparison to Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On. Nobody — not a single one of Mayer’s contemporaries — has come up with anything resembling a worthwhile antiwar anthem that is as good and speaks for their generation as much as his “Waiting on the World to Change” — and he goes and hangs the whole album on it as the first single.
It’s a bold statement of purpose that is carried throughout the album, not just in sentiment, but also tone. Continuum is a gorgeously produced, brilliantly stripped-to-basics album that incorporates blues, soft funk, R&B, folk, and pop in a sound that is totally owned by Mayer. It’s no stretch when trying to describe the sound of Continuum to color it in the light of work by such legends as Sting, Eric Clapton, Sade, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Steve Winwood. In fact, the sustained adult contemporary tone of the album could easily have become turgid, boring, or dated but never does, and brings to mind such classic late-’80s albums as Sting’s Nothing Like the Sun, Clapton’s Journeyman, and Vaughan’s In Step. At every turn, Continuum finds Mayer to be a mature, thoughtful, and gifted musician who fully grasps his place not just in the record industry, but in life. ~ All Music Guide

Release Notes:
In the current digital age, the idea of a band being independent has blossomed to levels previously thought unimaginable. Record labels will always have an omniscient presence in the music industry, but the Internet has given a voice to unknown and aspiring talent. From Exile has used this tool to put their debut album Crushing Reality up for free and market themselves to the masses in anticipation of their sophomore effort Monolith.
Marking a new direction for the band, their second album focuses heavily on the instrumental aspects, as guitar duo Eric Guenther and Ben Wetzelberger put on a clinic that is ear-opening in its execution. Crushing Reality was a melodic progressive death metal album, highlighted by raspy screams, ten-plus minute opuses, and an unfortunate tendency to wander haphazardly through dull sound pieces. The most noticeable difference between the two albums is how tight the band has gotten as songwriters on Monolith. The eight tracks pack in plenty of tempo shifts, atmosphere changes and crushing riffs, with none of the filler that was present in their debut.
Monolith, while split into separate tracks, could be seen as a conceptual piece of music. Each song fades into the next one, creating a half-hour epic that never ceases to astound on a musical level. The guitarists work together as a cohesive pair, trading off spell-bounding solos and soaring harmonies that trail off into an unknown oblivion. There are more dimensions to the guitar playing than just wanking and overindulgent tomfoolery; witness the classical acoustic interlude in Impure Visionary or the soothing vibes transmitted on closer In The Fading Silence.
More than anything, From Exile knows how to set a mood. Ambient sections give off a light, airy feel to shorter number Veritas, while brilliant opener Arrival crushes the listeners chest in with the impact of an exploding fire hydrant. The epic title track sums the entire album up in one song, as the sublime guitar interplay builds to a soulful piano outro. The instrumental front on Monolith is important, as the vocals have been toned down a great deal. The harsh barking has been replaced by an occasional Cynic-esque clean vocoder style that is cold and mechanical.
The band got several members of death metal heavyweights Daath to have a part in the creation of Monolith. Daath guitarists Eyal Levi and Emil Werstler handled production and guest solos, respectively, while the drums were played by the legendary Kevin Talley. Having a band with the brutal sound of Daath interact with the progressive sound that From Exile brought to the table combined into a perfect match. While the bass is too low in the mix, and the drums seem to lack some punch as well, Levi did a stellar job putting an emphasis on the guitar work, where it belonged.
Its nice to be surprised every once in a while by an unsigned band and From Exile does just that. After a major line-up change that saw the amount of members split in half, the band pushed forward and took this new-found opportunity to explore unfamiliar territory. The biggest improvement in the three years since their debut is the tighter songwriting, which puts quality over quantity. Monolith is not only for instrumental/progressive-obsessed music nerds, but those that value substance over monotonous metal clichs.

My Review Pearl Jam’s third birth comes with mixed emotion: whilst obviously being a musical success it also contains some of Eddie Vedder’s sad musings on Kurt Cobain’s death, most prominently in the haunting “Immortality”. Inside the cover art, a beautiful poem is included:
I waited all day.
you waited all day..
but you left before sunset..
and I just wanted to tell you
the moment was beautiful.
Just wanted to dance to bad music
drive bad cars..
watch bad TV..
should have stayed for the sunset…
if not for me.
External Reviews It’s a sad paradox of these times that the artists who most successfully express our fears and anxieties are the ones who are least able to cope with the burdens of fame. Whether it’s Sinйad O’Connor, who masochistically invites humiliation with public displays of emotional nakedness, or Kurt Cobain, who finally just gave up, it’s sometimes tempting to say what Frank Sinatra once told George Michael – that is, “Stop complaining and enjoy the ride.” But then, Frank is not exactly the most sensitive guy himself.
No one regrets that he’s too famous now to be Ian MacKaye of Fugazi more than Eddie Vedder does. As it was for Cobain, it’s difficult for Vedder to adjust to the fact that the people who used to beat him up in school are now among his biggest fans. While Vitalogy is not the calculatedly anti-commercial album that In Utero was rumored to be (but really wasn’t) before it was released, the one designed to alienate all the fans Vedder doesn’t like, it is a wildly uneven and difficult record, sometimes maddening, sometimes ridiculous, often powerful.
“As privileged as a ~censored~” is how Vedder sums up his fame in “Immortality.” “Victims in demand for public show.” In “Corduroy,” success has left him disaffected and no longer in control of his destiny: “I’m already cut off like I feared/I’ll end up alone like I began,” he sings before concluding: “All the things that others want for me/Can’t buy what I want because it’s free.” Ironically nostalgic for the desperately troubled youth that inspired his best and most tormented songs, he sings on “Not for You”: “All that’s sacred comes from youth/Naive and true with no power/Nothing to do/I still remember/Why don’t you?” Like Pete Townshend, whose Quadrophenia was the soundtrack of Vedder’s adolescence, Vedder seems afraid that while once he was the Punk, he’s now the Godfather.
Vedder is also more haunted by intimations of mortality than ever before – not exactly a new theme for him but a chilling one for a record whose title means “the study of life.” The album opens with a death-obsessed song called “Last Exit,” and its final track, “Stupid-mop,” concludes with a meditation on suicide. On “Immortality,” Vedder acknowledges, “Cannot stay long/Some die just too young.”
Vitalogy has a number of gripping songs that match the soaring anthems of Ten, the extended grooves of Vs. or the poetry of either record. The first three tracks are a promising start: “Last Exit,” “Not for You” and especially “Spin the Black Circle,” a revvedup thrash tribute to vinyl, rock harder than anything Pearl Jam have ever done. “Whipping” and “Corduroy” are also hard edged and catchy. “Better Man” is a haunting ballad about a woman trapped in a bad relationship; it recalls the character study “Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town” on Vs. As on “Daughter,” also from Vs., Vedder’s empathy for and identification with women throughout Vitalogy is remarkably affecting and unforced.
Interspersed among the stronger tracks, though, are throwaways and strange experiments that don’t always work. The demented polka “Bugs,” which features Vedder, backed by a discordant accordion, ranting paranoiacally about insects, makes an uncharacteristic stab at humor but ends up being more silly than funny. “Pry, To” is a one-minute doodle that consists of Vedder spelling out the word privacy over and over until we get the point already.
But the most bizarre cut on the record is the last one, “Stupidmop,” a seven-minute hommage to the Beatles’ “Revolution 9.” Consisting of tape loops of distressed voices over banshee guitar howls, the song begs the question, “Is anyone still listening out there?” It opens with a young girl repeating “My spanking, that’s the only thing I want so much.” “Why is that better than a hug?” a woman asks her. “Because you get closer to the person,” the girl replies. The cut closes with a dialogue that is even more disturbing than it might ordinarily be in the wake of Kurt Cobain’s death. A man asks a woman, “Do you ever think that you actually would kill yourself?” “Well, if I thought about it real deep, I believe I would,” she answers. They’re the last words on the album.
Bart Simpson once daydreamed that he was a rock star with a phony British accent, singing, “Me Fans Are Stupid Pigs.” Some may think Vedder has reached the point where he thinks his efforts are just Pearl Jam before swine; they’ll dismiss this record as swerving dangerously close to being contemptuous of his audience. But Vitalogy isn’t Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music, nor does it seem like a tossed-off interlude like Zooropa. It’s more a portrait of an artist in crisis, a man who hasn’t yet decided what direction to take next.
My Favorite Track(s): Immortality
