? I number among my friends a handful, perhaps more, of electronic music enthusiasts. Haloed around them are acquaintances who take their pleasure in different areas of the post-rave electronic dance diaspora (from jungle to dubstep, minimal techno to house etc.) and who regard themselves as reasonably knowledgeable about their respective scenes. Quite a few people in both camps are surprisingly unaware of the progenitors of the music they love. Please note I?m not claiming that Kraftwerk are the sole begetters of the myriad genres and sub-genres that make up dance music today: the sampling of Trans-Europe Express on Afrika Bambaata?s Planet Rock doesn?t mean they invented hiphop ? a daft claim I?ve encountered on more than one occasion. However, their techniques, musical approach and subject matter certainly justify their position as the fathers of a majority of electronic and post-rave dance music.
Kraftwerk?s world tours between 2002 and 2006 and the Minimum Maximum DVD and CD live documentation have been an exercise in raising brand awareness and a chance to reaffirm the importance of their role. The activity also perhaps represents a rediscovered love of their own music and a desire to refresh and refine their oeuvre, as they did in 1991 with The Mix. Whether it also proves to be their swan song cannot be known, however I believe it?s likely to be the case in light of the thematic closure (ecologically supportable and efficient reconciliation between man and machine) that Tour De France represents. Ultimately though, the activity of the last few years is surely the essaying of a summation of a life?s work for the judgement of posterity.
Der Katalog, the long-mooted and long delayed, digitally-remastered box collection of the group?s key releases is surely the final stage of this process. That it represents a dotting of the full stop at the (possible) end of a long career may also be one reason why it has now been delayed for so long. Other reasons are probably the group?s famed perfectionism and also a pragmatic scheduling of relatively similar releases at an interval that will reduce consumer exhaustion to a minimum. Unsurprisingly, the three albums (Kraftwerk I, II and Ralf and Florian) that predated Autobahn are missing from Der Katalog. Their inclusion would have disrupted the otherwise striking consistency of the group?s approach over the last 30 years, a key, though relatively minor factor in their wider historical significance. In light of Kraftwerk?s remarkable, and welcome, self-control in not releasing extraneous product, even the smallest details acquire greater significance than would be the case for other artists. Thus, Der Katalog sees the renaming of Electric Caf? to the more sweeping (and originally titled) Techno Pop and the improved iconography of album visuals: the group portrait of Trans-Europe Express, replaced by a train symbol, the radioactivity warning symbol replacing the original radio set on the cover of Radioactivity. This is in contrast to the characteristic, but still surprisingly poor availability of the group?s back catalogue. For many years it was difficult to purchase Computer World (viewed by many as seminal) on CD. The inlay card on my copy of The Man Machine is a collage selling albums by other artists, common practice on inner sleeves in the days of vinyl, but rarely seen on CD.
Such details are characteristic for a group that has occasionally, and endearingly, failed to live up to its own image of machinic self-discipline and corporate presentation: many commentators make the common mistake of assuming that Kraftwerk have hymned the machine to the exclusion of feeling, but the central theme of their oeuvre, and what continues to ensure their relevancy, is their examination of the impact of technology on humanity itself.
If you?re tempted to purchase a copy of Der Katalog on eBay, prices tend to be in the region of ?150 to ?300 and copies are rarely available.

Autobahn

Although Kraftwerk’s first three albums were groundbreaking in their own right, Autobahn is where the group’s hypnotic electronic pulse genuinely came into its own. The main difference between Autobahn and its predecessors is how it develops an insistent, propulsive pulse that makes the repeated rhythms and riffs of the shimmering electronic keyboards and trance-like guitars all the more hypnotizing. The 22-minute title track, in a severely edited form, became an international hit single and remains the peak of the band’s achievements ? it encapsulates the band and why they are important within one track ? but the rest of the album provides soundscapes equally as intriguing. Within Autobahn, the roots of electro-funk, ambient, and synth pop are all evident ? it’s a pioneering album, even if its electronic trances might not capture the attention of all listeners. Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AMG ?

Release Date: October 9, 2006
Tracklist:
1. Fire 2. Sorry Go ‘Round 3. Carnival of Rust 4. Locking Up the Sun 5. Gravity 6. King of Fools 7. Roses 8. Desire 9. All the Way/4U 10. Delicious 11. Maybe Tomorrow Is a Better Day 12. Dawn
Finnish band Poets of the Fall has certainly made a lot of commercial press lately in the overseas music industry, particularly in Europe. It’s little wonder why. Their smooth combination of “pop, rock, metal and industrial music” is quite well noted. Composed of Mark Surresto (Marko) on vocal/guitars, Olli (Ollie) Tukinasen on guitar, and Markus (Captain) Karrlonen as the producer, keyboardist and programmer, they make a band that’s not afraid to show their ability to mix these genres seamlessly and with quite a bit of heart.
Many people in gaming know them as the band who sung the theme to Max Payne 2, the tragic “Late Goodbye.” Their first few releases in the music industry were the singles to “Late Goodbye” and “Lift”, both of which were featured on their anticipated album “Signs of Life”, which sold more than 30,000 copies to date. Part of their aim is to make a more global market, and with the release of “Signs of Life” in 2005, they begun to do just that, earning awards like the Emma (Finnish equivalent of the Grammys), a Game Audio Network Guild award for best original song (”Late Goodbye”) among other honors. Even further, their latest album in 2006 “Carnival of Rust,” shot to #1 after a week’s release. In December of 2006, it was certified platinum, making it the biggest album success for the band yet.

Mike Rutherford -1980- Smallcreep’s Day

Smallcreep’s Day is the first solo album by Genesis bassist and guitarist Mike Rutherford. The title suite (occupying side 1 of the original vinyl version) is based on a dark, surrealist novel of modern English industrial life by Peter Currell Brown (“Smallcreep’s Day”) written in 1964. The story is a satire on factory automation, revolving around the character Pinquean Smallcreep. Day in, day out, Smallcreep works as a slotter. He slots one piece of metal into another ad infinitum. He has no idea what finished product he’s creating. One day, however, he decides to find out what he’s making; and so begins his journey…
The album was released in 1980 and was produced by David Hentschel, who also produced the Genesis album Duke the same year. Anthony Phillips, Rutherford’s original songwriting partner in Genesis, plays keyboards on the album. It was recorded at ABBA’s Polar Studios in Stockholm, Sweden, for tax purposes, in the fall of 1979.
Personnel * Ant Phillips – keyboards * Noel McCalla – vocals * Simon Phillips – drums * Morris Pert – percussion * Mike Rutherford – guitars, basses
* Produced & Engineered by David Hentschel of Dukeslodge Enterprises, assisted by David Bascombe * Recorded at Polar Studios, Stockholm * Mixed at Maison Rouge Studios, London * All tracks written by Mike Rutherford
Track Listing Smallcreep’s Day suite 01 - I. Between The Tick & The Tock – 3:59 02 - II. Working In Line – 3:07 03 - III. After Hours – 1:45 04 - IV. Cats And Rats (In This Neighbourhood) – 4:50 05 - V. Smallcreep Alone – 1:33 06 - VI. Out Into The Daylight – 3:49 07 - VII. At The End Of The Day – 5:35
08 - Moonshine – 6:23 09 - Time And Time Again – 4:52 10 - Romani – 5:25 11 - Every Road – 4:13 12 - Overnight Job – 5:43
Highlights include:
* “Working in Line” - One of the two single releases from the album. If you could convert a celtic reel into a progressive-rock track, this would be the result. An unceasing driving rhythm section; along with vocals and soaring guitar solos.
* “Out Into the Daylight” - Rutherford proudly shows off his guitar skills, while massive synth pads and drums fill the surrounding space.
* “Time and Time Again” - A ballad, similar those of the same era in Genesis. Not particularly strong, but counted amongst highlights because this was the only other track to be chosen for single release.
The album was released on vinyl in February 1980, re-released in October 1986, and the CD issue was in June 1989. All have long been deleted. The US pressing of the original LP reversed the sides, so that the “Smallcreep’s Day” suite was on side two. It was released there by Passport Records.
There was also one track called “Compression” (6:08) which was left off the album but appeared as a B-side. This track is perhaps one of the rarest Genesis-related tracks to find since it has never been released on CD (except on a very limited-edition 2002 German fan club CD, “It’s Only Knock And Knowall”).
“Romani” can be construed either as the plural of Romans, or as the classical reference to the proper name of the gypsies.

Release Notes:
Six Waves of Woe reviewed by Rock and metal domain
Forest of Shadows was founded as a solo-project in the autumn of 1997 by Niclas Frohagen. After having recorded the demo “the silent cry”, multi-instrumentalist Micce Andersson joined the band. Together they reinterpreted and polished up the old material and released it as promotion material both on cd and online at mp3.com, all with the intention of attracting a record deal. Putting songs on mp3.com turned out to be a winning concept and for a couple of week’s forest of shadows dominated the metal charts. The English company “rage of Achilles” (cult of Luna, mistress) had noted this and offered the band a record deal. In 2001 the mCD “where dreams turned to dust” was released and soon afterwards the work on a full-length album began. During its production, Niclas and Micce started drifting apart, not as friends but in terms of musical direction. This resulted in that Niclas finished the album, later on titled “departure”, on his own. As if the separation wasn’t bad enough “rage of Achilles” went out of business just as the album was finished. The record deal was handed over to finnish label “firedoom” who not only released the album but also offered a deal for yet another album. This time things went more smooth and in 2008, after three years of slow progression, the album “six waves of woe” was finished. The first track ‘Submission’ starts of with a very slow downbeat of a keyboard part then eventually springs into life. The track is a mix of keyboard, guitars and slow drumming beats. Then on the 2:40 mark vocals kick in and the tempo of the song picks up. So far judging by this track the music is very experimental with a traditional rock/metal riffs thrown into the mix. The vocals are very distorted and sometimes spaced out, while throughout the track the music shifts from very slow to a very upbeat tempo.
The second track ‘Self-destructive’ pretty much starts off from where the last track kicked off. Keyboard effects start this track off with slow guitars while this time around vocals are clear and softly spoken. Then the music shifts into a more progressive hard metal feel showcasing what the band can bring to the table great stuff. Vocals do get heavier and shift towards some death metal/doom styles.
The third track ‘Detached’ starts off with a more direct feel to it while the previous track assaulted our ears with some death/doom riffs this track on the other hand starts off with a prog feel. The track soon changes however incoarapting the doom side of things. With thunderous and big thick walls of riffs followed by some equally impressive breakdowns you can’t help but smile after listening to this track Brilliant.
The forth track ‘Moments In Solitude’ Starts off with a full assault of riffs, what this band offers so far is the ability to mix things up on a huge scale effective and at the same time genius. The track is a 9:30 minute lesson of what you can do by mixing elements of prog, doom, metal, rock and even death the results are breathtaking.
The fifth track ‘Pernicious’ starts off with a more industrial metal feel to it breaking down to more slow melodic beat downs with slow tempo drums and then erupting again into the more heavier doom side of things. The only disappointing side to things is the lack of quality solos but to be honest it’s a type of record that doesn’t need them it’s just a straight forward no-nonsense feast of Doom/Metal songs.
The last track ‘Deprived’ is the longest track on the album clocking in at 10:30 minutes long. The track gets more bizarre and experimental with every riff and note played. Vocals are clean and somewhat slower and more direct this time around, so far the track is a slow burner then erupts in glorious fashion.
Overall then I can’t find many faults with this album. This is an album that really will appeal to both metal and doom heads with glorious prog elements to it and mixtures of death and clean vocals this a must buy. And for the album to be recorded by one person is something to be proud of as well.
