Sonic Youth is an American alternative rock band formed in New York City in 1981. Since 1985, the band’s core line-up has consisted of Thurston Moore (vocals and guitar), Lee Ranaldo (vocals and guitar), Kim Gordon (bass guitar, guitar and vocals) and Steve Shelley (drums). From 2000 to 2005 Jim O’Rourke served as a full-time member of the band as a multi-instrumentalist. Before Shelley, who drummed for The ~censored~ before joining Sonic Youth, the band went through several drummers, including Bob Bert (who later went on to co-found the band ~Censored~ Galore with Jon Spencer of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion fame), sometimes-actor Richard Edson and Jim Sclavunos.

In their early career, Sonic Youth were associated with the No Wave art and music scene in New York City. Part of the first wave of American noise rock groups, the band carried out their interpretation of the punk rock ethos throughout the evolving American indie underground that focused more on the DIY ethic of the genre rather than its specific sound. They have found moderate mainstream success, and are generally seen as one of the leading alternative rock groups of their time.

Sonic Youth are inspired by the guitar symphonies of Glenn Branca (with whom most of the band have performed), the heavy protopunk of The Stooges, The Velvet Underground, and MC5, the punk poetry of Patti Smith, the Krautrock of Can, the psychedelic garage rock of The 13th Floor Elevators, as well as avant-garde composers like John Cage. The band were often praised for “redefin what rock guitar could do” using a wide variety of unorthodox guitar tunings, and preparing guitars with objects like drumsticks and screwdrivers to alter the instruments’ timbre.

   The Reigning Sound was born in Memphis, TN. Its daddy was a Flash & The
   Memphis Casuals 45 and its mother a Barbara Pittman single. Life was not easy
   for this musical what-not. Kids shunned it for its rock`n’roll sensibility
   and obvious lack of polished shtick. In true stepchild fashion though, the
   band continued to develop a unique sound all it’s own that didn’t really
   focus on any of the preconceived genres. Within weeks they found their
   audience and were shakin’ down the house at clubs all over town. “Hail, Hail
   Rock ‘n’ Roll and ~censored~ your prefab garage” appears to be some sort of battle
   cry for them. This from their leader Greg Cartwright whose previous bands The
   Oblivians & Compulsive Gamblers were so closely linked to the “Garage Punk”
   stereotype of ten years ago. “We were never really like most of the other
   bands” says Greg.” I covered R&B, gospel or country songs with absolutely no
   regard for any 60’s aesthetic or sound, I just enjoyed finding an obscure
   song and breathing some new life into it.” This same instinct for a truly
   inspired cover or a genius original can be found in the Reigning Sound. Greg
   is aided by bass player Jeremy Scott, organist/guitarist Alex Greene and
   drummer Greg Roberson. The first album, which is on SFTRI, showed Greg’s
   talent for crafting great moody soundscapes but “Time Bomb High School”,
   their new record on In The Red, shows you the full spectrum of their dynamic
   live show. Catch them this summer on their West coast tour with the Hives and
   see what it’s all about.

It’s a dubstep, Rave. Or is it? Well, the A-side ‘King Pin’ certainly is, pushing the ultimate-man-skank-powah levels into the red with some pure dancefloor anthem business for all the sweaty mosh crew, but The Others prove diversity on the flipside with a surprisingly slinky garage mover in ‘Splinter In My Soul’. MJ Cole need not cack himself yet, but The Others have shaped something a little more refined and flexible here with tough garage rhythms underpinned by the sort of mammoth bassline they excel at.
